He actually voices his own character in his own work on his own time, and he is happy to do it. I think there are times when you have to, and I want to pick those moments really specifically. And it's like, no, baby, I'm a whole person. My husband is white, and luckily I've worked through my stuff before. She became a stay-at-home mom and writer with her own blog. How do you think about that in terms of the importance of what people are able to see? For so many of us, those boxes begin to feel like shackles when we realize they dont fit our unique shape, yet we keep trying because we crave acceptance and validation. This meant enrolling himself in courses at New York Universitys Tisch School of the Arts, and it meant graduating back in 2009 with his degree. Black people and especially Black queer people are often positioned as a punch line, and if you're not willing to participate in that, it cuts you off at the knees since those are mostly the parts available. And I was always kind of being told by, you know, classmates, by teachers, by - even at home to, like, butch up, to be more of a man - like, this - perform at masculinity, which is very confusing GOODMAN: To a 5-year-old. I'm committed to making sure that every little Black, brown, POC, queer kid, teenager, adult knows that they are of value. I think thereve been some shifts, but its still a lot of lip service. And as time went on, I think I, you know, further specified that it's love - you know, people to love themselves and see themselves and know that they are three dimensional, full people and that they're worthy of love even with all their flaws, even with all their mistakes. But then you always realize that you're not like them GOODMAN: And that you're also - if you are approaching it from that angle where you're not whole and you're lacking, then you are, I think, unconsciously or subconsciously, excusing bad behavior from those white men where you become a racial prop. And I first just want to say that I happened to pick up your book during a time when I was struggling. And then, you know, when you start getting to that preschool, kindergarten age, then there starts to be these rules that I feel like get put on you. And thats never the most fun process. This has been amazing. Im still pinching myself., Next thing: Mr. Goodman is working on his first book, a collection of essays on Black queerness to be published next fall by Legacy Lit Books, a division of Hachette Books focused on BIPOC authors. I dont want to forget that and be like, Oh, Im here because Im Brandon. No, were here because of community. When it comes to Hollywood, his work is about highlighting stories like his own, which arent seen often. GOODMAN: Yeah, because it was - you know, I was latching on from a place of lack. I totally related to that. His position allows for more LGBTQ+ and Black voices to be heard, and he takes on the task with joy. We're required to fit into boxes based on our race, gender, sexuality, and other parts of our identities, being told by others how we should behave, who we should date, or what we should be interested in.
